Big Ole Freak

Big Ole Freak is an 11" x 14" x .75” painted canvas with hand-beaded applique designs and embellishments featuring Houston rapper, Megan Thee Stallion. Big Ole Freak (BOF) is a fully functional purse, honoring the aesthetics of a handmade niimíipuu, Nez Perce style flat bag. It is fully lined with monroe satin and backed with denim that is secured with leather strips of brain-tanned deer hide. The piece can be viewed from all 360 degrees and spans around 57.5” in length from the bottom fringe to the top of its handle.

Kellen Trenal created BOF for a virtual gallery presented by yəhaw̓ Indigenous Creatives Collective in July 2021. The exhibit, “Telling Our Own Stories: Afro-Indigenous Creatives” focused on Black Native and Black Indigenous voices from the western hemisphere. The show worked to create conversation around anti-Blackness, anti-Nativeness, and what Black-Native solidarity looks like.
